Co Pay

Dental Insurance can have many types of plans on offer. Part of this can be co-pay, which basically means that insurance company and the customer both pay some of the charges from dental work. Usually dental services like simple extractions, fillings, x-rays and minor surgical procedures are paid in this way. The insurance can pay for the majority of the cost but the customer pays the rest. Co-pay can increase the payment required by the customer when it comes to more complicated services such as crowns and orthodontics. The customer may be required to pay at least half of the cost of these services. Dental plans tend to outline clearly the services that are covered by co-pay.

Co-pay is not really insurance coverage because the customer is always called upon for partial payment of the services. This is better than paying the full amount but it is still not full coverage. Although it is helpful for some people, for many, the cost of the insurance plus the co-pay amounts results in an overall loss. Many people find that the co-pay option is not a financial saving in the long-term unless they require extensive work on a regular basis. If a person does not regularly need dental work, then the cost of the insurance payments and the co-pay amounts required does not result in any saving and can leave the customer out of pocket.
