Choosing Insurance for Braces

When shopping for insurance for braces, there are a number of factors to take into consideration. After you have decided whether or not you are
shopping for insurance or a discount plan, the fun begins. Remember, every insurance plan is going to be different. Do not even consider a dental insurance plan that does not cover braces, if orthodontics expenses for your children are in your future.

Premiums

The premium is the amount that you are expected to pay out of pocket for the dental insurance. When offered through an employer, the premium is often split between you and your employer. If you are shopping on your own for dental insurance, you will need to find a balance between the cost of your premium and the deductible amount.

Deductibles

The first consideration when shopping for dental insurance that covers braces is the deductible for which you will be responsible. Look for a plan that has a lower deductible than the total cost of your child's orthodontic work. This will save you from the frustration of having insurance, yet never using it because you do not meet your deductible.

Co-Pays

Most dental insurance plans also have a co-pay. This is an amount that you are responsible for every time your child visits the dentist. What you need to find out is whether or not the co-pay will be due every visit, or just the first visit for your child's braces. There is no getting around co-pays, but you need to know exactly how much the orthodontics are going to cost you, so that you can budget accordingly.

Exclusions

The final thing to consider when shopping for dental insurance that covers braces is possible exclusions. Some insurance companies will not cover braces that are not considered medically necessary. Braces that are solely cosmetic in nature will not be covered under many dental insurance plans. If you face one of these types of plans, talk to your dentist about the possibility of having the orthodontics coded as medically necessary. Often the braces are needed to fix a jaw alignment problem, so this is not out of the question.

Insurance for braces is out there, if you know where to look. If your employer is offering you dental insurance for braces, take it! It is the most affordable option you will find! Otherwise, keep your eyes open and find the best option to meet your dental needs and those of your children. Their perfect smiles will be your reward.
