Is Cosmetic Dentistry For Me?

Those who suffer from the emotional trauma associated with a smile that is less than perfect, understand the need for cosmetic dentistry. But choosing cosmetic dentists who produce quality results can be a problem.
Cosmetic dentistry advertising makes every dentist look like the best, so how can you know whom to choose?

What Is Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is any dental procedure done to improve the look of a person's teeth, and therefore his or her smile. There is often not a medical reason for the cosmetic dentistry procedure. Many view it as simply a vanity type of dentistry, while those with extreme problems with their teeth may argue that there is huge psychological benefit to having the smile they are dreaming of. Sometimes those without problems with their smile choose cosmetic dentists to make their smile look even better. This type of dentistry can help reverse the look of aging, damage to the teeth, and birth defects.

Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures

There are four basic procedures with cosmetic dentistry. These are porcelain veneers, teeth whitening, tooth shaping, and gum lifts.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are a type of dental implant that is placed over the front of the teeth in the front of the mouth. This makes the teeth look smooth, and covers any damage, such as a chipped or broken tooth. When you notice a beautiful smile on an actor or actress, you are often looking at veneers, not their normal teeth. Some turn to veneers to help hide discolored teeth. Others use them to cover gaps or teeth that are too small. It is a quick procedure requiring no surgery, and the veneers are made out of porcelain, so they are strong and durable. They are permanently fastened to the teeth, unlike a dental appliance that is removed.
